Henry Joseph Haydel

Henry J. Haydel, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2018, at the age of 94. He was born on February 27, 1924, and attended high school in the city and graduated from Tulane University with a degree in business administration. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater on the destroyer escort USS Norman Scott as the ship’s supply officer. Following the war, he returned home and married his wife Norma Bartels. He worked as office manager for the American Beverage Company, bottlers of RC Cola and Nehi soft drinks, then operated a hardware store in Marrero for 34 years. He was a longtime member of Carrollton Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder. He also served on the mission board for many years. His free time was frequently spent with family and friends at their vacation home in Covington, Louisiana. All who knew him admired him as a kind, gentle and caring person.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Stanislas Haydel and Amy Gans Haydel. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Norma Bartels Haydel, and his three sons Paul Joseph Haydel and his wife Janis Haydel, Norman Henry Haydel and his wife Joanna Haydel, and Timothy John Haydel. His grandchildren are Sally Lynn Jones, Christopher Paul Haydel, Michael Robert Haydel and Hannah Hope Haydel. His great grandchildren are Ashley Elizabeth Jones, Lucas Christopher Haydel and Marcos Jacob Haydel.

His family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff, doctors, nurses and medical professionals at Wynhoven Nursing Home for the extraordinary kindness and care that they provided our father in his final months with us, and to the staff of Notre Dame Hospice for their support in his final days.

A memorial service will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard in New Orleans, at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 27, 2018. A memorial visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:30 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
