Her joyful spirit never aged, but on July 16, 2021 at 95 years Helen Kuehne Evans passed away peacefully in her sleep in Atlanta, GA. Helen is survived by her daughters Sheila E. Hutchinson (Elliott) and Helen M. Evans of Atlanta, GA, her son Patrick (Terese) Evans of Biloxi, MS, her grandchildren Katie and Adam Stimpert and Connor, Molly, and Dylan Evans, her sisters Diana K. Guidry of Metairie, LA and Karen K. (Billy) Harrison of Advance, NC, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, C. Helen McCarthy Kuehne and Albert J. Kuehne, her husband Robert F. Evans, her son, Bobby Evans, Jr., her brothers Milton, Ronald, Gene, and Ken Kuehne, and her sister Marianne K. Comarda.
Helen was born and raised in New Orleans, attending St. Francis of Assisi grade school where she met her lifelong friend, Rita (Sr. Rose, O.P.) Bowen. There she enjoyed playing CYO ball and earned a scholarship to Dominican High School (DHS). She loved her years at DHS, where she played volleyball and basketball. In fact, her basketball team won the championship all four years, and her championship bracelet is currently on display at the DHS gym.
Helen graduated 8th in her DHS Class of 1943, and earned a scholarship to Dominican College. She went to work, however, and met another lifelong friend, Sarah Shaw, during those years. With her outgoing and social nature, she especially loved her job at Godchaux’s on Canal St. and worked there until she married Bob Evans.
They moved to Metairie to raise their family, and for several years Helen taught sixth grade at St. Christopher. A member of St. Benilde Parish since its inception, she was a devout Catholic. Helen attended Mass every Sunday and holy day, prayed the rosary daily in her later years, and most importantly lived her faith. She was always kind, gracious, humble, and cheerful, saw the best in everyone, the silver lining, the cup half full. She loved New Orleans with all its traditions and craziness, her Irish heritage, the Saints, tennis, LSU football and baseball, her Yorkies, and of course, her family. Quite the talker, she could hold her own with the best of them. At 89, she left her beloved New Orleans to be near her daughters.
Her children wish to thank her many friends, large family, and caregivers who brought light to her journey. We will always remember her smile, her love of life, her St. Patrick’s Day gatherings, and her gentle and good-humored disposition. She was a wonderful mother, and we will miss her, every day, but we take heart in knowing that she is at peace with the Lord and reunited with those she has loved and lost.
We wish to welcome you to her memorial gathering at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., in New Orleans, LA 70124 on Saturday, June 18th, 2022 beginning at 9:30 AM, with a eulogy and Catholic Memorial Service to follow at 11:30 am. Interment will be in All Saints Mausoleum.
The family invites you to share your fond thoughts, memories, and condolences online at www.lakelawnmetairie.com.
