Harold "Hap" William Vanderbrook

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Margaret Vanderbrook and five siblings, Fred Vanderbrook (Margaret), Joseph Vanderbrook (Norma), Henry Vanderbrook, Jr. (Joyce), Joyce V. Freeman (John), and William Vanderbrook (Beverly).

Harold is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Shirley Meyers Vanderbrook; his two daughters, Susan Vanderbrook and Jean V. Derenbecker (David); two granddaughters, Jessica Derenbecker and Kaitlyn Farner (Jef); and one great-granddaughter, Addison Mae Farner. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Harold was born in New Orleans on January 14, 1930, and was a graduate of Samuel J. Peters High School. He was a sheet metal mechanic with Local Union #214 and retired in 1992.

Harold was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of Divine Providence Catholic Church, where he was also a member of the Men's Club. He was deeply involved in the EYO, the youth organization of the parish, as well as the annual parish fair.

Harold was a professional umpire with the Veterans Umpire Association, where he achieved induction into the Louisiana Umpire Hall of Fame. In his youth, he loved playing baseball, and later in life he loved watching baseball and football. He loved sharing his stories of his days of playing and umpiring baseball. He especially enjoyed watching LSU football and baseball. After his retirement, he took up the game of golf, where he enjoyed playing in the local senior tournaments.

Harold's biggest passion was his devotion to all of his girls, where in his retirement, he would joyfully bring his granddaughters to school.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Serenity Hospice, especially to his nurse, Breni Crabtree, for the care and compassion they gave Harold; Sr. Monica with the Sister Servants of Mary; and to his sitter, Corliss Adams. A special thank you to the family members and neighbors who also helped to comfort him in his final days.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Monday, November 6, 2023 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM. The interment will follow the chapel service at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
