Gerald "Jerry" Robert Cannon, 81, of Slidell, Louisiana, passed away on February 3, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on August 21, 1942, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and former resident of River Ridge, Louisiana.
Jerry proudly served as a Sergeant of the Motor Pool in the Louisiana Army National Guard for six years and qualified as a Sharpshooter of the M-1 rifle. During that time, he married his high school sweetheart with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they had four children and built a life with laughter, warmth and enduring love. He started his first business, Cannon & Cannon, Inc., and later founded Heavy Equipment Services, Inc., pursuing a successful career in the heavy equipment transportation industry, and earning respect from his customers for his promptness and dependability. He had an extraordinary gift for creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie, ensuring that no gathering was complete without a drink in hand. Whether it was a birthday, holiday, or a weekend at his camp on Lake Catherine (“Jerry & Amelia’s Big Apple”), his love for people was evident in the way he effortlessly brought them together, making every occasion an opportunity to create lasting memories.
Jerry is survived by the love of his life, Amelia Mazerat Cannon, and their children: Jody Cannon (Kristi), Anthony Cannon (Anne), Ainsley St. Pierre (Barry), and Katie Cannon. He was a cherished grandfather to Brittani Rivet (Brady), Joshua Cannon (Carleigh), Austin Norman, Savanah Norman, and Aiden Cannon; and step-grandfather to Alexis Cannon (Gina), David Cannon, Jr., and Jeremy Cannon. Jerry was also a great-grandfather to Brady Rivet, Jr., Charlie Rivet, Josie Rivet, Emery Rivet, and Blair Cannon. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles R. Cannon, Jr. (Hazel) and Daryl Cannon (Bonnie) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. Cannon, Sr. and Claire Rihner Cannon, his brother, Wayne Cannon, Sr., and nephews, Brian Cannon and David Cannon, Sr.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 PM at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Jerry Cannon will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His memory will live on through the legacy he leaves behind.
