Frances "Sue" Nadau du Treil

Frances Suzanne Nadau du Treil, PhD, LCSW (Sue du Treil) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Yvette Marie Montagnet Nadau du Treil and Joseph Francis Nadau du Treil, Sr. and passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at the age of 75. Dr. du Treil was preceded in death by her parents and her youngest brother, Joseph Frances (Frank) Nadau du Treil, Jr. She is survived by her siblings, Jean Francis Nadau du Treil, Dean Joseph Nadau du Treil, and Mrs. Rose Marie Nadau du Treil Gallagher (husband, Edward F. Gallagher, Jr.); nieces, Michelle Marie Gallagher Rojas (husband, Scott Rojas) and Jennifer Ann Gallagher Gray (husband, Tom Gray); and great nieces and nephew, Megan Rojas, Ryan Rojas, and Hannah Gray. Sue loved her family and always put them first. She and her siblings endured a difficult childhood, but because of this they became close and loyal to each other. She enjoyed laughing, having flowers in her house, often from her own garden. She liked to write, was an avid reader, loved to go to lunch and dinner with family, colleagues, and friends, and always stayed abreast of the current political news.

Dr. du Treil received a Masters and Doctorate from Tulane University School of Social Work. She began and remained in the practice of Social Work in Child Protection Services for 23 years followed by 20 years of service at Tulane University School of Medicine, where she was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Louisiana Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders. During her tenure in Child Protection, Dr. du Treil began as a social worker in Orleans Parish, where she was a Crisis Intervention Worker, then a Crisis Intervention Supervisor, and then served as the District Supervisor in both West Jefferson and East Jefferson Parish. It was in West Jefferson that she, her courageous staff, Clinical Social Workers who volunteered time from their private practices, and Professors Alice Clark and Lynn Perlmutter established numerous treatment groups for parents and children they served. Parents and children came to these groups nervous at first, but quickly learned new skills so that the children were safe again. West Jefferson Parish also offered the first Intensive In-Home Services to families where children were about to be placed in foster care, but instead were assigned a Mastered Degreed Social Worker to be available to the family 24 hours a day. In the first year of this program 100 families were served, and in only one family did children have to enter foster care. Many of these parents and children in West Jefferson would come every year to a large Christmas party at the Child Protection Office, where they felt welcomed and knew they could at any time come to get help. This is not often seen in Child Protection offices. Many children were made safe in their own homes by this effort.

Dr. du Treil was a licensed clinical social worker and board-certified clinical supervisor in the State of Louisiana, a member of the National Association of Social Workers where she held the Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, and a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. After receiving her PhD, Dr. du Treil continued her work as the senior social worker at the Louisiana Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders, while researching adherence to medical care by the chronically ill. She also was a member of the steering committee for the Parents Empowering Parents (PEP) parenting program for parents of children with bleeding disorders and was a contributing writer and editor to the program. Dr. du Treil participated and ensured that the PEP parenting program was brought to the families in Louisiana that she served during her entire tenure at Tulane. She also published several articles in the International Journal of Hemophilia and other peer reviewed journals. She gave numerous presentations locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Throughout her career, Dr. du Treil, served on numerous committees and boards and was often called upon to give expert advice to colleagues, students, judges, legislators, and multidisciplinary teams. Though Dr. du Treil was not a biological mother, she wishes to be remembered for all the children's lives she touched in her career.

Her family wishes to thank the caregivers of Academy Houses Harvard House, the nursing staff with Metro Med Pass, and the staff of Interim Hospice for the care and compassion that was given to Sue.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday, December 20, 2024 at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 9:00AM. The interment will follow the Mass at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.
