He was the husband of the late Joan Duckworth Woods and son of the late Robert and Nabirtha Peytral Woods. He is survived by his son, Robert E. Woods, and daughter-in-law, Shaney Halter Woods, two granddaughters, Jennifer and Caroline Woods, one step-granddaughter, Gabrielle Reid Cefalu and one grandson, Robert Stewart Woods.
Emmett was an owner of Duckworth Woods Tire Service, Inc. and was very active in industry associations serving as president, executive committee member, state director and board of directors of several tire dealer associations. He received several awards, including Tire Dealer of the Year for Gulf South Tire Dealers Associations and was inducted into the Louisiana Independent Tire Dealers Association Hall of Fame.
He was a licensed amateur radio operator and served as president for both the Jefferson Parish and Pearl River Parish radio clubs.
Emmett was a member of the Louisiana Air National Guard from 1954 to 1976 and an active member of the State Guard from 1976 to 2005. He served as chief of staff of the Louisiana State Guard and was promoted to the rank of Colonel. He was a Board Member of the National Guard Officers Association, and sector chairman for Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR)-Dept. of Defense.
He served as President of the Mid-City Kiwanis Club and a member of the Veterans Highway Business Men’s Association, Beef Master’s Breeders Association and the Southeastern Beef Master’s Breeders Association.
He was very active in his Masonic Fraternal Organizations and in 1970 served as Master of Metairie Lodge No. 444. At the time, he was the youngest person to have been elected to this Office. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies (Louisiana) and the York Rite Bodies (Louisiana). As a member of the Jerusalem Temple since 1960, he served as Colonel of Units, President of the Chanters Unit, Member of the Dune Buggy Unit, and President of the Past Masters Unit.
He received the Degree of Chevalier and the Legion of Honor Degree of the Order of DeMolay and served as Dean of the Legion of Honor from 2004 to 2006. He also served as Past Master Counselor and Chapter Dad of the Metairie Chapter.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Wednesday December 10th, 2014 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Ponchartrain Blvd, New Orleans. Funeral will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
