Dorothy Nyman Laborde

On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Dorothy Charlotte Nyman LaBorde, passed away after an accidental fall from her wheelchair on November 28, 2024. She was a resident of Brookdale Canopy Oaks in Ocala, Florida.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Charles Dupont LaBorde and her sons, Charles Dupont LaBorde, Jr and Victor Kraft LaBorde. She is survived by her brother, Carl John Nyman, Jr. and her children Charlotte Ann LaBorde Hunt, Renee Marie LaBorde Kurica, Paul Andre LaBorde and Steven John LaBorde. Dorothy has eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Dorothy Charlotte Nyman was born to Dorothy Kraft Nyman and Carl John Nyman, Sr. on February 6, 1927 in New Orleans. She graduated from Behrman High School in Algiers with honors and attended Newcomb College as a scholarship recipient.

On August 10, 1946 Dorothy Nyman married Dr. Charles D. LaBorde. On the cutting edge of the Baby Boom, they immediately started to build a family of six offspring. Both parents were deeply involved in the lives of their children. As for Dorothy, she practically lived in her car, driving her children to and from their numerous activities. She was a Brownie/Girl Scout Troop Leader for her daughters and later performed the duties of school homeroom mother for her sons.

In the early 1970’s when her youngest son began to attend school full time, she returned to her studies and completed her degree at Tulane University. Subsequently, she taught second grade at isidore Newman School.

As the years flew by Dorothy enjoyed various activities with her husband. They loved to garden, keep fit by walking/jogging in Audubon Park, and attend their sons’ sporting events. Always an outdoor person, Dorothy loved to go boating and fishing with her family. Afterwards, she fried up the most deliciously fresh fish to be found in New Orleans.

Dorothy was first and foremost, unselfish. Throughout her life she denied herself by making innumerable sacrifices on behalf of her husband and children, without uttering a single word of complaint. She loved each and every member of her family deeply.

After retirement, Dorothy did not stop giving. She volunteered as a tutor for children struggling in school. For many years, she volunteered at Lakeview Hospital in Covington, LA.

The last seven months were very special to her. She was happy, active and enjoyed life as best she could. At Brookdale Canopy Oaks, she was much-loved by residents, staff and entertainers who performed there. Comfort can be taking from the outpouring of their love and condolences. She participated in all activities and won many prizes. She will be sorely missed there and by her family.
