Charles Gabriel Winkler, Sr., of Picayune, Mississippi, died on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at the age of 87. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 15, 1935. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Capraro Winkler; his daughter, Karen Marie; and his parents, Leopold and Olive Morrel Winkler.
He is survived by his daughter, Catherine Olive Winkler; three sons, Charles Gabriel Winkler, Jr., Kyle Patrick Winkler (Arlene), and Steve Charles Winkler (Cathy); and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charles is also survived by his childhood friends, Fr. Robert “Bob” Massett and C. B. Turner, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Charles served in the U.S. Navy as a petty officer from 1952 until 1960. For 16 years, he worked for various Federal government agencies, and 17 years for GE Marine and Defense Division. He also worked with the Pinkerton Detective Agency as a private investigator and ICRR as a railroad detective. He supported the International Fellowship of Jews and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Charles had a wonderful sense of humor, and loved to laugh. He was blessed in life and often shared God’s words in prayers. Charles spoke of his children often and loved them with all of his heart. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans, on Friday, November 4, 2022 at 12:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 10:00AM. The interment will follow the Mass at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.
