Catherine (Cathy) Perez Haney, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, passed away quietly with family by her side on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the age of 69. Cathy was born on April 7, 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana to parents, Raymond M. Perez and R. LaVerne Perez.
Cathy graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Chalmette, Louisiana in 1970. After college, Cathy and her husband left New Orleans and moved to Lafayette, Louisiana. While in Lafayette, Cathy’s son, Joe, and daughter, Rebecca, were born. Shortly after Rebecca’s birth, Cathy’s family moved overseas because of her husband’s career in the oil and gas industry. They traveled to and lived in many countries around the world, including Scotland, Norway, and Trinidad. In fact, Cathy’s third child, David, was born in Scotland. Cathy and her family moved back to the United States and settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1984, where her children attended Tulsa schools.
In Tulsa, Cathy met her second husband, Jerome Vance Haney (JV). Cathy and JV were married in 1990 and celebrated their 31-year anniversary in 2021. During her time in Tulsa, Cathy became certified as an Aerobics instructor and taught classes at St. Francis Hospital. Cathy entered the insurance industry in 1990, working for State Farm Insurance and AAA Insurance for a total of 26 years.
JV taught in the Tulsa public school system for over 30 years, where he was also a successful basketball coach. He later became a TV and radio color-commentator for the University of Tulsa (TU) and Oral Roberts University (ORU) football and basketball programs.
Cathy was an avid sports fan. She attended many of her children’s sports activities as well as JV’s TU and ORU games. Cathy even watched this year’s NFL football playoff while a patient at St. Francis Hospital. Cathy also loved watching movies, especially with her kids and family. Some of her favorite movies were classics like “Dr. Zhivago”, “Brian’s Song”, and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, and action movies like “Bullet”, “The Fugitive” and “Die Hard”. Cathy’s favorite movie was “While You Were Sleeping”.
Cathy loved DOGS. She always had at least one dog in the house, and sometimes she had two or three dogs at a time. During her life, she owned a Cairn Terrier, a Westie, a Beagle, a Pit Bull, an English Bull Dog, a Labrador Retriever, a Pekingese, a Yorkie, a Sheltie, a Pug, a Shih Tzu, a Lhasa Apso, and a Schnauzer.
Cathy also loved taking photographs or having professional photos made of her children, grandchildren, and other family members. It was equally as important to her that she share the pictures with everyone in the family. What Cathy was best known for was never forgetting a birthday, anniversary, or holiday like Valentine’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas. In fact, while in St. Francis Hospital, she was worried about getting her Valentine cards bought and addressed in time to be mailed out.
Cathy was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She loved her children and grandchildren more than anything. She was extremely proud of her children for the adults and parents they had become.
Cathy is survived by her husband, JV Haney, of Tulsa, OK; son, Joe Johnson and his wife, Katie, and their daughter, Emma, of DeRidder, LA; daughter, Rebecca Fabich, and her husband, Brandon, and their sons, Aiden and Stefan, of Belgrade, MT; son, David Johnson and his wife, Michelle, of Houston, TX; siblings, Bonnie Mayo of Maryville, TN, Patrick Perez and wife, Mary Ann, of Covington, LA, Anita Levine and husband, Jeff, of Blountville, TN, and Maria Curry and husband, Mike, of Magnolia, TX; and 15 nieces and nephews, and numerous other family members and friends.
