With heavy hearts, we share the unexpected loss of Jonathan William Graves, 34, of Uncasville, whose life ended far too soon. He was born on February 22, 1990, in Norwich, the son of The John William and Mishelle Elizabeth Graves of Oakdale.
Jonathan was a man of immense generosity and strength, born with a resilient spirit that carried him through life’s many challenges. A graduate of the Norwich Tech plumbing program, he joined the US Marines after high school where he was promoted to the rank of LCpl. He successfully completed a combat deployment in Afghanistan as a logistics vehicle system operator attached to CLR - 15 FWD. He was awarded multiple medals and several commendations, a testament to his bravery and commitment. After his service, Jonathan attended Porter and Chester Institute to further his skills in plumbing and built a career excelling in home renovation.
Above all, Jonathan was a devoted father who cherished his two children deeply. He would often take them for wagon rides around the yard to watch hummingbirds and enjoy the garden. He found joy in simple pleasures, such as fishing, boating, and gardening during his free time. A steadfast and caring friend, Jon was known for helping neighbors with rides, odd jobs and would always step up to help anyone he learned was in need.
Though his journey ended too soon, Jonathan’s enduring love for his family and his unyielding determination leave an indelible mark on those who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed by all who were touched by his caring spirit, generous heart and infectious laugh. His memory will continue to inspire strength and hope in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to share his life.
In addition to his parents, Jonathan is survived by his children Leah and Ethan Graves of Uncasville; brother Michael Graves, his spouse JoAnna McClenathan and nephews Oliver and Zenon of Mystic; Grandmother Carolyn Strickland of Niantic; Grandparents Zenon and Debra Gluszczak of Florida; Aunt Kelli Antoniac and her spouse Paul Tomczyk; Aunt Julie Oliver and her spouse Brian; Aunt Nikki Lahr and her spouse Patrick; Uncle Dale Horton and his spouse Alyssa; as well as many beloved cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his grandparents John Campbell and Barbara Ann Graves; and grandfather Robert Strickland.
May he find the peace he sought, and may his legacy remind us of the importance of compassion, resilience, and love.
