Christmas will never be the same. Ingrid D. Cormier passed the reins to Santa on November 29, 2023, just shy of her 79th birthday. While the holidays are a special time, no one made it that much more special than Ingrid. Buddy the Elf learned how to decorate Gimbels from Ingrid. If you had the honor of knowing Ingrid, then you knew that there was no “off season” as preparing for the next Christmas was a consistent part of her life.
Born December 14, 1944, to Margaret and Clyde Diehl of Quaker Hill. Ingrid grew up in a home with two devoted and loving working parents and that ethic prevailed throughout her life. Ingrid was a proud graduate of the University of Connecticut where she studied family and child development. With degree in hand, Ingrid went to work for the State of Connecticut was a fierce advocate for the welfare of children and families navigating the challenges of life. She retired with 30 years of service to Connecticut.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Henry Cormier. Their love story began in high school in 1958 and blossomed through college.
Over their 67 years together, Ingrid and Henry had a profound impact on family, friends, and the communities in which they lived. It was more than Ingrid’s work with the State and Henry’s business at The Medicine Shoppe in New London. Ingrid and Henry welcomed many students into their home in Waterford through the AFS Intercultural Program. Additionally, Ingrid was the quintessential team mom for the New London Legion baseball program. Known for her pancake breakfasts, Ingrid worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help care for players and families.
Ingrid is further survived by Hank Cormier (Ret. USAF) and his wife Kathy Barry and Adam Cormier and his wife Pam, and four grandchildren, Ellis Barry-Cormier, Abbie Barry-Cormier, Kaya Cormier and Jed Cormier. Additionally, Ingrid is survived by her AFS exchange-son Dr. Martin Weyruther and his family in Berlin, Germany.
Ingrid’s legacy will long be remembered and not just for her enormous spirit and generosity around Christmas, but for the countless lives she touched along her journey through life.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held on Saturday, January 20th from 1-3pm at the Port N Starboard, Ocean Beach Park, 1225 Ocean Ave., New London, CT.
