A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 17, 2025, at 11:00 am at St. Marcellus Catholic Church in Rynella, LA. Father James Nguyen will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by organist Roy Boudreaux accompanied by Cheryl Dartez. Readers and Gift bearers will be Adrienne DeJean, Nola Simon, and Amber LeBlanc.
Don will be laid to rest at Holy Family Cemetery in New Iberia.
Visitation will be at Evangeline Funeral Home in New Iberia from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Sunday, March 16, 2025, with a rosary being recited by the Knights of Columbus at 6:00 pm. Visitation will resume Monday, March 17, 2025, at 8:00 am until 10:30 am.
Pallbearers will be Chris Williams, Emmett Simon, Eugene Peltier, Jr., Ralph (Sonny) Pichoff, Jr., Tirney DeJean, Marty Domingue, Chaz Leblanc and Dickie Fremin. Serving as honorary pallbearers is Donnie Simon, Dreau Williams, Eli, Ezra, and Easton LeBlanc, Donald (Duck) Fremin, Raymond Labit, Gerard Peltier, Morris Hebert, Roy Comeaux, and Luther Simon, Sr.
Don had a fruitful career in the retail grocery industry working for National Food Store (Canal Villere) for 30 years before opening his own grocery store, Don’s Grocery and Deli until he retired. Don loved the outdoors and was an avid garden enthusiast where he enjoyed making a large garden every year. He enjoyed his time together with his wife Helen, kids, and grandchildren, working in his garden and watching football. Additionally, among family and friends, he was considered to be the world’s biggest Saints fan where his love for the New Orleans Saints ran deep rather win or lose.
Don was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 7050 in which he was also a fourth degree Knight. He also served the church as an usher, choir member, and as a leader of the Columbian Squires at St. Marcellus and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Churches. He coached youth baseball and served as an Assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America.
Don was born on February 4, 1944, to Lawless and Lottie Guidry Simon. He passed away peacefully on Thursday March 13, 2025, at his residence with family by his side.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Don is survived by his wife, Helen Fremin Simon of 57 years, daughter and son-in-law Nanette and Dreau Williams, son and daughter-in-law Donald (Donnie) Simon, Jr. and Erika; five grandchildren; Amber and husband Chaz LeBlanc of Orlando, FL, grandson Christopher (Chris) Williams of Destrehan, granddaughter Adrienne and husband Tirney DeJean of Delcambre, LA, grandson Emmett Simon and fiancé Shelby Desormeaux of Delcambre, LA, granddaughter Nola Simon of Delcambre, LA, four great grandchildren Ella (his little nurse), Eli, Ezra, and Easton LeBlanc of Orlando, FL., sisters; Sue and husband Morris Hebert from New Iberia, LA, Connie Louviere from New Iberia, LA, step brother Leroy Louviere, Jr. and wife Jennifer from Ragley, LA, sisters in law; Shirley Peltier and Mary Jane Pichoff from New Iberia, LA, brothers in law Raymond Labit of Lafayette, LA, and Donald (Duck) Fremin and wife Yvonne (Bonnie) of New Iberia, LA.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his step- father, Leroy Louviere, Sr.; one brother, Floyd Simon and one sister, Elaine Zimmerman.
The family would like to express sincere thanks to Hospice of Acadiana and all of their staff for the excellent care and compassion they provided Don throughout his journey until God called him home.
