On November 26, 2022, William J. Stein was called home to our Lord, Jesus Christ. The sixth of seven children born to Dr. Ignatius Stein and Agnes Harvey Stein of Oyster Bay, NY, Bill lived to the beautiful age of 90. A New City resident for more than 63 years, Bill was a highly accomplished civil engineer whose consulting practice encompassed the design and development of residential and commercial building complexes, roads, bridges, and dams, and waste water treatment plants across the country and in Africa. Bill was an avid chess player, golfer, skier, cyclist, swimmer, dancer, private pilot, and poet whose luck over the years brought him more than a half dozen super jackpots. Bill devoted many years of service to the New City Volunteer Ambulance Corp., St. Augustine's parish, and to the Marian Shrine. A graduate of Regis High School, Manhattan College, and Harvard University (Master of Science in Civil Engineering), Bill was a brilliant, exceptional mentor and friend whose life was guided by his deep faith in God.
Bill is survived by his devoted and loving wife Carroll Pendergast Stein and by his five daughters, Carroll (and Paul) Carris of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, Eileen (and Harold) Peterson of Stony Point, NY, Mary (and Steve) Cohen of Hunter, NY, Patty Stein of New York, NY, and Linda Stein of New City, NY. Bill is also survived by his ten grandchildren, Marie, Margaret, Colleen, Monica, Cathleen, Ben, Michael, Mark, Matthew, and Max, and by his five great grandchildren, Anderson, Colette, Brayden, Daniel, and Sophie, all of whom were the light in his life.
