Sonny Lou Volpe

He is survived by his wife Anne, brother Francis, children Anne Marie, Susan (Bruce), Sonny (Michelle), Ralph, grandchildren Dan (Danielle), Shayna (Fabian), Joey (Brianna), Ralphie, Gianna, great grandchildren Xander, Talia, Enzo and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father, mother, and brother Ralph.

Louis was a loving man, and known to family and friends as Sonny, Sonny Boy, Sonny Lou, Zip and the Prizefighter.

He was born in New York, NY and grew up in the Bronx as well as the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan.

He boxed as Sonny Lou, an amateur Welterweight, in the prestigious New York Golden Gloves tournament, and as a professional from 1950-1952, with a record of 15-3-1, 19 bouts and 113 rounds. His career was cut short due to an eye injury suffered in the ring.

He went on to join the Theatrical Teamsters Local 817 for an illustrious career of 43 years. He started as a driver, became a Transportation Captain and an Executive Board Member for 9 years. He worked on many movies and TV shows. The first movie he worked on was Panic in Needle Park. His credits include work on The Godfather, Parts 1 & 2, The Exorcist, A Bronx Tale, Oz, Rescue Me, just to name a few. He was known for his sense of humor and being a great storyteller. He will truly be missed by his many lifelong teamster friends and co-workers.

In his time away from work he enjoyed working outside around the house, the CB Radio Club, Boxing Club Ring 8, being in the Sheriff’s Auxiliary, vacations in Aruba, watching sports especially boxing and family time. He loved to be in the sun, sit at the kitchen table reading his papers and looking out the window.
