John was born on July 18, 1935, in the Bronx, NY, to Hugh and Helen (nee Scanlon) Hanlon. He was a proud Navy veteran who served overseas during the Korean War and later also served in the Army as a Reservist during the late 1970s. John was a dedicated employee of the City of New York, MABSTOA, as a transit supervisor for 35 years, and upon retirement, a driver for the Clarkstown Mini-Trans. John was always eager to learn new things and returned to school to receive a degree in Business from Rockland Community College. He was an active parishioner of St. Paul parish in Congers, NY for over 50 years as well as a dedicated member of the Haverstraw Council of the Knights of Columbus.
John is survived by his loving wife Eileen of 60 years, their four children; Tara (Robert), Eileen (Matthew), Maureen and John (Jennifer); 7 beautiful grandchildren; sisters Helen, Mary and Lillian; brother-in-law Billy (Kathleen) along with many nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten.
John was known for his loyalty, quick wit, storytelling, fondness for Irish music, and love of travel. John’s hobbies used his keen intellect and creativity for building and designing projects in his home and that of his friends and children. He could see a problem and would always have a practical, inspired solution. He was a man of principle with strong faith, love of family, and county. He bore the difficulties of his illness with dignity and strength. For all these things, we will never forget him.
Eternal Rest grant unto him, O Lord.
The family would like to thank friend Mary Quigley for her invaluable support. We are also thankful to Dr. Erickson and John’s dedicated caretakers at Tolstoy Foundation Nursing Home. We are so grateful for their kindness and compassion.
