John George
(April 26th, 1947- November 18th, 2021)

Obituary
John George (Kunjumon) was born on April 26th, 1947, in Mavelikara, Kerala to the late Mr. George John and the late Mrs. Rebecca George. He was the second of 6 children and had 5 sisters. He went to Govt. Boys High School, Mavelikara and studied at NSS College, Pandalam. He joined the Indian Air Force in 1966 and was stationed in Delhi. While there, he met his future wife, Surmma, and they got married in Kerala in 1972. John eventually moved to the United States in 1974. He initially lived in New Rochelle, NY, where he and his wife started their family, before settling down in Congers, NY in 1985. He was a responsible and loving father and taught the need for a good education and hard work to achieve goals and success.
He began his career working for a German company, Hantscho Plant in Mount Vernon where he gained favor with his foreman and fellow coworkers due to his quick thinking and problem-solving skills in engineering, as he pursued an Engineering Degree from Westchester Community College in Valhalla. He then decided to tap into his entrepreneurial spirit and opened Priya Indian Cuisine in Suffern, NY in the fall of 1986. It was through this venture that he was able to embrace his customers and show his dedication to the community.
Along with his commitment to his family and career, John had a strong devotion to his spiritual life and was an active member of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Malankara Orthodox Church. He was a member of the Westchester Malayalee Association and held its position of President over the years. Bowling was a keen hobby of his and he won many championships. He gave to orphanages in India and helped in the education of many.
By God’s grace, John enjoyed life to the fullest till the very end, celebrating life with friends and family. He will be remembered for his love for family and strong loving friendships he made throughout the years. He showed us that whatever we put our minds to, we could achieve.
John is survived by his wife, Surmma; children Rebecca George, Mary John-Montalvo, Shirley John, and George John; sons-in-law George Varghese and Eddie Montalvo; daughter-in-law Shona John; grandchildren Elizabeth, Mathew, Jonathan, Emma, and Ashley; sisters Kunjumol, Ponnamma, Molly, Joyamma, and Leelama, as well as extended family and countless friends in the United States, India and the Middle East.
