James E. McCann

James Edward McCann of New City, NY, 83 years old, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2023. Jim was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, and later a lifelong resident of New City, NY. He was born on September 1, 1939 to Margaret and Frank McCann. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx and married the love of his life, Margaret (Peggy) Lynch, in 1963. Before starting a family, Jim was a Big Brother to several youngsters in NYC. Jim had a long and successful career in the New York Police Department from 1961 to 1985, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant and lead the Bronx Warrant Squad. He participated on a Fugitive Investigative Strike Team (FIST), a joint federal task force of the U.S. Marshals Service created to capture violent fugitives that were wanted by state and local law, before retiring from the NYPD after 24 years of service. After retirement, he was a private investigator, led security at Merrill Lynch and later served as Head of Security at The Westchester Mall in White Plains, NY during its construction and early years of operation. He continued to serve the community during retirement delivering meals for Meals on Wheels of Rockland.

Jim was a very generous man who fondly shared stories of his time on the force and throughout his younger years living in the Bronx. He was an avid Mets and Giants fan and loved basketball, but his greatest joys came from his family. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sons Jim and his wife Jasmin, and Kevin and his wife Ratha and grandchildren Ava, Jack, Jimmy, and Aidan. A beloved brother of Frank (Patricia) McCann and a wonderful uncle (“Uncle Teddy”) of Diane Polkowski, Regen Hufnagle, Catherine Munoz, Frank McCann, Michael McCann, Fred Krass, Maureen Lutrin (Krass), Michael Krass (deceased)., Tricia Lynch, and Daniel Lynch. He was predeceased by his sisters Margaret McCann, Catherine McCann, Patricia Hufnagle (McCann), Rosemarie McCann and Barbara McCann. Jim will be forever missed by all who knew him.

Family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-9pm at Higgins Funeral Home 321 S. Main St., New City, NY.

Mass of Catholic Burial will be held on Friday, 10am, at St. Francis Church, 128 Parrott Rd., West Nyack, NY, followed by burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W Stevens Ave Hawthorne, NY.
