Ellen M. Murphy

Ellen Marie Murphy of New City passed away on September 15, 2019. Born in New York City on April 6, 1933 to John and Marie (Higgins) Kissane, Ellen was a graduate of Mt. Saint Ursula Grammar School and High School. On August 22, 1959, she married Michael Murphy at St. Francis of Rome Church. They moved to New City in 1961.

When her youngest child started school, Ellen returned to school herself, and earned her nursing degree at Rockland Community College. She then spent more than 20 years as an operating room nurse at Nyack Hospital.

Ellen was active at St. Augustine Church, and was a member of the Catholic Big Sisters, the Catholic Daughters, the Clarkstown Garden Club and New City Senior Club One. She especially enjoyed her monthly luncheons with her Red Hat Friends.

She is survived by her husband Michael and children; Maribeth (John) Nicastro of Orangeburg, John Murphy of New City, Michael (Julie) of Wayne, NJ, Brian (Monica) of Northport, Robert (Jessica) of Mooresville, NC, and Sheila (Brendan) Rhatigan of Pismo Beach, CA, 13 loving grandchildren, brothers Charles (Barbara Ann), John (Carol) and Joseph (Irene) Kissane and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and brother James Kissane.

Ellen was the most tender and loving wife, mother, grandma, sister, and friend imaginable and was devoted to her Catholic faith. She will always remain in our hearts.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 19, from 1-3pm and 5-9pm at Higgins Funeral Home, New City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Augustine’s Church in New City at 10am on Friday, September 20, interment to follow at St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
