Born in Suffern, New York on April 11, 1960 to James and Betty Farkas. David grew up in the private community of Lake Lucille, where he enjoyed swimming, boating, fishing and bike riding. He graduated from Clarkstown High School North in 1979. After graduation David joined the Army, where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Certificate of Merit for Safety. He was promoted to the rank of Specialist Four and was honorably discharged on March 26, 1985.
The one thing David enjoyed the most, was his life as a volunteer firefighter. Joining the New City Fire Engine Company #1 at the age of sixteen in 1977, David was with the company until he moved into the Spring Valley Fire District. He then joined Spring Valley Hook and Ladder in 1993, serving until the time of his death. In those twenty years, he served as 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, and Lieutenant and as Captain, a position that he held for six years. David also was a past president of the company. He was one of the chief drivers a position that he enjoyed most. David was currently a commissioner with the East Spring Valley Fire District. He was also a member of the Rockland County Volunteer Fireman’s Association, the Rockland County Chief’s Association and a member of the Firemen’s Association State of New York.
David also enjoyed his family and is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Kim (Secor) and their two children, Shawn and Katrina. His mother Betty and her husband John (Bradley). Brother Steven, his wife Dagmar and their children Todd (TJ) and Stephanie. A step-mother, Genevieve Farkas. Two step-brothers, Paul Brennen and Geoffery Bradley. Two step sisters, Kathleen Bevridge and Judy Brodil. David was also close to his mother in law, Katherine Secor and his sister in law, Pam Secor. David also had step nieces and nephews.
David worked for the Rockland County Sewer District #1 for almost twenty- seven years. A place where his co-workers knew they could always count on his loyalty.
David is predeceased by his father, James Farkas, a brother James Farkas Jr. and his father in law, Henry Secor.
Visiting hours are 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Higgins Funeral Home in New City. Firematic services at 8 pm on Wednesday May 22, 2013. Funeral at Higgins Funeral Home in New City on Thursday May 23, 2013 at 11 am Burial to follow at Fredrick Loescher Veterans Cemetery on Brick Church Rd in New Hempstead.
