Charlie was born on December 13, 1932, in Brooklyn New York. He graduated from James Madison High School and married the love of his life, Sheila Feeney, on June 8, 1957. They had four children and moved to Bardonia, New York, in 1971.
He was a carpenter for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, retiring as a Foreman of Mechanics after 25 years.
Endlessly generous, giving, funny, and hospitable, he loved to entertain both family and friends. He loved to cook, taking over the family dinners when Sheila went back to work and becoming quite the gourmet. Everyone knew not to interfere with preparations in his kitchen.
Charlie’s home and his lawn were his pride and joy. He loved to fish and to golf, but more than anything, he loved football. He was, without a doubt, football’s greatest fan. He played sandlot football in his teens and was a lifelong Jets fan. He had season tickets since they were the New York Titans playing at the Polo Grounds. He cheered them on to their 1969 SuperBowl win and though they disappointed him many times, he never gave up hope that they would one day win another. His motto was, “Just wait until next year!”
In his last years, his greatest happiness came from snuggling with his beloved cat, Archie, his best friend and companion after the children and grandchildren were grown.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Florence, and by his two brothers, Bill and George. He is survived by his wife Sheila; by his four children, Jeanine Reiter, Joseph Reiter (and wife Alina), Marielle Reiter Poss (and husband Joseph Poss), and Michael Reiter (and wife Tarie Lewis); his four grandchildren, Victoria, James, Cianan, and Finnian; his sister Anne (and husband Jack); and by many nieces and nephews, all of whom adored him.
A wake will be held on the morning of Wednesday, March 24, at Higgins Funeral Parlor in New City from 9:00 to 10:30, followed by a mass at St. Francis of Assisi in West Nyack, New York, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Seedlings Braille Books for Children (www.seedlings.org).
