Augustine Paul, 74, of Nanuet, NY, passed away unexpectedly on April 25, 2023 in Kerala, India. He is survived by his wife Dr. Aney Paul, and his children, Dr. Marina & John Oraczewski, Shabana Paul & Brad Keen, and Natasha Paul.
Augustine was born on December 26, 1948 in Kerala, India to Mariam and Augusthy of the Thevarkunnel family. He graduated from Delhi University with a bachelor's degree in economics and an LLB degree in law. He was working at the British High Commission when he met his wife Aney. They got married in 1977 in New Delhi, India, and together they moved to the US in 1982 in order to achieve the American dream and to give their daughters a better life. He was proud of his work in the US at the NYS Housing Finance Agency and at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Pearl River.
Augustine was an incredibly loving and devoted husband and father, and the backbone of both his immediate and large extended family. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by several siblings, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. Augustine was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. He was known for his kindness, generous acts of service, sharp wit, sincerity, and his easy laughter. He served and supported his family, relatives, and friends, often in ways unknown to them. He was instrumental in helping his wife Aney become a Rockland County Legislator, helping her with all of her post-graduate degrees, and supporting her in all of her various endeavors.
Augustine loved watching old classic movies and TV shows including Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Matlock and Perry Mason. He loved card games, playing solitaire, gardening, and eating mangoes in all forms. He was of Roman Catholic faith and served as an usher for many years at St. Anthony Parish in Nanuet, NY. He was very active in the community, as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Nanuet Seniors Club, St. Anthony’s Senior Club, Nanuet Civic Association, and Historical Society of Rockland. He was also involved in several cultural organizations, including India Catholic Association of America, Hudson Valley Malayalee Association, and FOKANA. He will be deeply missed by many.
Augustine’s wake will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in New City on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 2:00-5:00 pm and 6:00-9:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Anthony Parish Church, followed by interment in St. Anthony’s cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Augustine Paul’s honor to the American Diabetes Association. (link: http://main.diabetes.org/goto/honorAPaul)
