We celebrate the loving memory of Robert “Bob” Smiley who quietly passed away at home with friends and family by his side in New Braunfels, TX on February 4, 2023. Bob was born in Yakima Washington in 1928, he was a devout husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, patriot, mentor, musician, and a dear friend to all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary.
Bob lived life to the fullest as the “entertainer”. An accomplished musician, he often found ways to brighten the lives of others with his broad smile, kind words and loving spirit. Chief Master Sergeant Smiley had a long, distinguished Air Force career that was highlighted by many accomplishments including a tour in Korea and various commands before retiring from the Pentagon in 1974. Bob and Mary then built another successful career as entrepreneurs and traveled the world touching thousands of people with their stories and loving spirit. As true lovers of people, both became accomplished motivational speakers and supporters of their country through political and religious charities as they continued to mentor and positively impact the lives of all.
Bob and Mary loved to travel and have been to Europe, Russia, China, Australia, and Japan but their favorite was Spain as he was stationed there from 1968 – 1973 and returned many times since. Bob loved to practice his self-taught Russian, Chinese and Spanish language skills navigating around foreign countryside’s, even in Russia before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Where other people saw ideology and politics, Bob saw people through his Christian spirit and made friends everywhere. Bob often spent his time helping others realize how to live life fully even if it meant personal sacrifice or inconvenience for him and Mary. He gave freely of all he had, including his time, money and love.
Most of all, Bob was a devoted family man and husband. He cherished Mary, whom he called his “Angel”, his soulmate and best friend. The world was a better place with Bob playing his part in it but as a man of great faith and determination, we know he is with his loving creator and hugging everyone in sight. There is a good chance he is behind a keyboard or has a guitar in his hands. We love you!
