Rick immigrated to Texas in 1953 with his parents, John and Margaret (Mac Allister) Somerville, and four siblings, first to Houston and later moving to Austin where he graduated from Austin High School . He became a U.S. citizen in 2009.
A Veteran, Rick proudly served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Post Fuels 3rd class Petty Officer (Airdale) on the U.S.S. Oriskany. From his Home Port of Alameda, California, he served three tours in WESTPAC in Viet Nam conflict. He worked for Walmart for 21 years, leaving due to his health. His exposure to asbestos and Agent Orange while in the service, resulted in him fighting another conflict with COPD and lung cancer, proving doctors’ predictions wrong more than once.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Patsy (Meneley) Somerville, his daughters, Crystal Bridwell (husband, Clay), Melody Somerville, and Casey (Scarborough) Lehmann (husband, Mark). He is also survived by siblings, Pamela (Somerville) Stephenson (husband, Robert) , Sandra Magruder, and Greg Somerville; grandchildren Kira Cowser, Parker and Jay Graham, Caden and Jake Bridwell, Adelynn Papst, and Shelby, Hunter and Jordan Lehmann, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Brenda Somerville.
Rick enjoyed life, sharing his infectious smile, and spending time with his many friends. He loved people and never met a stranger. He loved fishing at the coast, hunting in the hill country, and dancing all over Texas with his beautiful wife. He will be missed.
The family is grateful for the doctors and nurses who cared for him at the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio and Hope Hospice. Memorials may be made to Disabled Veterans Administration or charity of choice.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 29, 2022 at First Protestant Church, 172 West Coll Street, New Braunfels, Texas. A reception will be held following the service from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm
