Luther was born on March 3, 1925, to Sam and Eula Jackson in Mission, Texas. He was one of eight siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Alice Jackson Seale and Joyce Jackson McClure, and four brothers, Lawrence L. Jackson, Charles Edward Jackson, Lt. Col. Arthur J.W. Jackson, Ret., and Sam Jackson, Jr. He is survived by his brother, Howard Jackson (Betty Ann) of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.
Luther joined the Navy when he was 16 years of age. When the Navy found out his real age, he was discharged and had to return home. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Army, during World War II and was assigned to the 59th Field Hospital. His tour of duty included France, England, Germany, Austria, and Japan. He was among the troops who entered the concentration camps after the war ended. He was married for a brief time shortly after the war. He spent many years working in Nevada with a heart and lung surgical team before returning to Texas.
He lived in Kingsville, Texas for 25 years before moving to New Braunfels. He was a member of the University Baptist Church where he was involved in teaching the Royal Ambassadors, singing in the choir, and helping with activities in the church. He had many friends in Kingsville and was always ready to drive those who were sick to the doctor or hospital. Over the years, he helped many cancer patients who needed assistance. He loved to listen to music, and classical music was definitely his favorite.
He loved to tease his many nieces and nephews and enjoyed being a great uncle to the younger nieces and nephews. He spent many years in the kitchen where he would cook meals for church members and friends in Kingsville. He loved being his niece’s “cooking buddy” every Thanksgiving. He would rise early in the morning to assist with getting the turkey in the oven, and he could be found washing dishes late into the night. We never knew where he found his energy! His last year to help was when he was 91 years old.
