She went to school at Edison High School in San Antonio and graduated with the class of 1957. Barbara graduated from Abilene Christian (College) University in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She married Frank Milton Bates April 17, 1965. Barbara worked as a Middle School Physical Education teacher and then was the co-owner, along with Frank, of Whopper Burger, Inc. After the sell of Whopper Burger, Inc. to Burger King Inc. in 1984, she continued to manage her commercial properties and investments.
Barbara was dedicated to the support and development of Christian Education for all ages. She helped establish Christian Heritage School in San Antonio, Texas and served on their board of Trustees. Barbara also was honored to serve as a Board of Trustees Member of Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas and was the recipient of The Distinguished Alumni Citation in 2008.
One of Barbara’s greatest passions was providing her ranch home, Solid Rock Ranch in Hunt, Texas, as a place for family, friends, ministers, authors and missionaries to fellowship and enjoy a time of peace in the beautiful surroundings.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Frank Milton Bates; her father, Leo Allan Wyres; her mother Georgia Ovaughn Kunsman.
Barbara is survived by her daughters and her sons in laws, Deanie and Skip Dampier, Kim and Mike Simpson and Lisa and Wes Stamps; her grandchildren Madison and Travis Ziegenbein, Grayson Dampier, Callan and Brenna Simpson, Brock Simpson, Franklyn Stamps and Boone Stamps; and her great grandchildren, Harper and Reagan Ziegenbein.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday January 27, 2024 at Sunset Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy. San Antonio, Texas 78218. Immediately following Barbara's Celebration of Life there will be a reception held at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home.
