I attended Temple Baptist for the year that I lived in New Bern, 2005-06.  The main reason I originally went to Temple was because of the wonderful singles group.  The main reason I stayed was because of Steve and his preaching.  I revisited Temple several times after moving so I could hear Steve preach.

I am shocked. Here is it June of 2015 and I just found out. Oh my goodness I loved Steve. I painted a portrait of him several years back and told him to put it in a closet for his grandkids! Wow... what a priceless man he was! He and Charlie Curtis will be the guys I think of when I think of Temple Baptist Church!

I am shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of my old friend, gone too soon.  My condolences to Steve's parents, and to Mike, and to his wife and children.  I was in Chapel Hill when Steve turned his life around, but lived in a house formerly the residence of a member of West Asheville Baptist, and his copy of the WABC newsletter still came there, so I was able to follow this development in Steve's life.  I only saw Steve once after that, and met his lovely wife and very young children, at the parsonage at Macedonia Church.  I went online tonight to see if I could find out what was happening for my friend, and I could not be more dismayed.  I recognize several names of other old friends who have left messages here, and I know we all feel this loss.  I hope you who remain will be comforted in this tremendous loss.

I attended Temple Baptist from 2005-08 before I moved away. 

Pastor Steve taught me what it was to be "Free in Christ".  He taught the truth of the Gospel, not legalism.  

The impact he had on my life will NEVER be for gotten.

Just heard of Steves passing. Steve was one of my best friends in High School. While we were very passionate about the wayward things we did in those days I was so happy to learn he became a pastor in that I also went into ministry. To All of Steve's family:

I am a childhood friend of Steve's since second grade.  We were friends even through high school with him always offering a listening ear to me.  After high school, I lost touch with him  until my father was dx'd with cancer and became a member of Macedonia.   I was visiting my father and went to church with him one Sunday.  Much to my surprise, Steve was the pastor.  His sermon was outstanding, "Who Appointed You Judge" and I will never forget it.  He visited my father and mother often and was a great support to them during his illness.  He officiated my dad's funeral service and his words were a great comfort to me and my family.  

I was stunned when my family told me of Steve's passing.  May he rest in peace and all of his family and friends find comfort in all the memories he created here on earth!

Maria,   I remember when you and Steve were in our singles at WAB.  We could tell that you two were in love and planning to do the Lord`s work. We were the two Marine couples who sat in the coffee shop before the 10:30 service waiting in great anticipation to hear Steve's message.  We would go to lunch discussing and chewing on the words God gave him to impart to us - Steve had a wonderful ability to cross intellectual boundaries and deliver the message of love and forgiveness while giving us the tools for application - a gift so few possess.  We appreciated the challenge of his delivery and thank him for renewing God's word for us.  There are just not enough words as Steve meant so much to so many. I grew up with Steve in West Asheville. I lost contact with Steve when he moved to New Bern. He was special even as a kid growing up. Steve had a passion for lost people and those who were searching for purpose in their life. His compassion was his greatest gift. I know Steve is in a better place today but the world he left behind is feeling a great loss. Love you brother.

We can not begin to tell you what Steve and his family meant to us at Macedonia Baptist Church. GOD blessed us with Steve's pastoring through his wisdom, patience, encouragement, and nurturing for 8 blessed years.  We considered Steve, not only our pastor, but our dear friend.

I am at a lost for words. I would sit through both services on Sunday just to hear his Godly messages that penetrated my soul to eventually release me into the loving arms of God. Steve was a great pastor, father, and outstanding individual. He will be missed greatly. His messages were always thought provoking and penetrated my heart and soul. I will never forget the time when we were playing in the old sanctuary for Celebrate  Recovery. We finished playing a rewrite of Comfortably Numb. There was one lone person clapping from the balcony; it was Steve. He is with God now. We will never forget him and his family.
