Patricia, "Pat", was raised in Wellesley Hills alongside her two brothers and spent most of her summers in New Ipswich, NH and Cape Cod. While attending Wellesley College, Pat had a summer job working at the "Sad Sacks Snack Shack" in Chatham, MA where she eventually met and married one of her favorite customers and love of her life, William Albert Wescott. After making the permanent move to Chatham, Pat was sworn in as postmaster of North Chatham at 21 years of age, making her the youngest postmaster in the United States. Interestingly enough, her service in this role was the reason why the job title was changed in congress from "postman" to "postmaster".
Pat and Bill raised their two sons, Brian and Bill, Jr., in Chatham and lived there for most of their lives until relocating to North Carolina in 2018. Pat was a devout Christian who also enjoyed playing the piano, spending time with family at their camp on North Beach, and attending antique car shows with her husband. Pat was a strong woman, intelligent, witty and kind, who was loved and respected by her friends, family, and community.
She will be missed.
Patricia is survived by her brother, Stephen T. Berkeley of Fiskdale, MA; her grandsons, William Albert Wescott III of Swannanoa, NC and Te Vezina of Puyallup, WA; her granddaughters, Meredith Perry of Colchester, CT and Patti Marques of Rifle, CO; her 6 great-grandchildren, and son, Brian Wescott, of Eastham, MA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William Albert Wescott, Sr; son, William Albert Wescott, Jr.; and brother, Ernest "Ted" Berkeley, Jr.
Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Patricia Anne Wescott.
