Nellie, known as "Tiny," and her twin, Lillie, were born on October 28, 1931 to Arthur and Irma Spruill of Vanceboro. She was raised with hard working values at her family and farm, which continue all through her life.
After graduating from high school, she attended Rex Hospital School of Nursing and received her RN degree. She started her career at John Hopkins but returned home to help care for her ailing father. She continued her nursing career at New Bern Surgical and retired after 41 years.
Nellie attended and was a founding member at Sherwood Forest Free Will Baptist Church, where she served in many areas. After moving in with her sister in Vanceboro, she attended Upper Room Ministries. She was always present in church until her health declined. She was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and others.
Tiny loved the outdoors, whether it was fishing or working in the yard. She had a love for animals and would take in any stray cat in the neighborhood. Tiny loved her family and was the happiest when the family was together. Even though she never had children, she was a loving aunt to all of her nieces and nephews.
Tiny was known for her energy, hard work, and generous heart. She would pray every day for good health so she could help others. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy; parents, Irma and Arthur Spruill; sisters, Martha Faye Spruill and Amanda Spruill Gaskins; as well as brothers, Arthur "Shorty" Spruill and Jimmy Spruill.
Tiny is survived by her sisters, Celia Whitford (Dalton) and Lillie Ipock; nieces, Nanette McKeel (Wayne), Guylene Gaskins Thomas (Gary); nephews, Mack Spruill (Barbara), Neil Spruill (Suzanne), and Donald Ipock (Kim); and many great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 30, 2023 from 12 p.m. until service time at Cotten Funeral Home. Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. in the Cotten Chapel with burial to follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
Arrangements are in the care of Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
