Marjorie Margie Humphrey Humphrey Hill

Marjorie Humphrey Hill was born in Deep Run, North Carolina on October 7, 1917. She was the third child of Oscar Humphrey, Sr. and Emma Smith Humphrey. She was raised in Deep Run with ten siblings; Evelyne Stroud, Annie Lee Smith, Ethel “Sweetie” Lee, Bernice Gray, Oscar “Jake” Humphrey, Jr., John Lloyd Humphrey, Carlye Humphrey, Alfred Emanuel Smith Humphrey, Clarence Humphrey, and Ralph Humphrey.

She married Jonas William Hill on December 16, 1936 in Kenansville, North Carolina. Marjorie was called “Margie” by friends and family and by her husband, whom she called J. W. Through their marriage of 41 years Margie was quite sensitive towards J. W.’s needs showing her constant love and care. Their love and support of each other, though not demonstrative was strong and everlasting.

Marjorie was blessed with seven children: Margaret Ann Murphy, Betty Lou Mattocks, Mary Frances Edwards, Jimmie Wilson Hill, Freddie Lane Hill, Melvin Larry Hill, and Patricia Hill. Margie was a natural and loving Mother; parenting was of particular significance, an enjoyable and pleasurable part of her life. Marjorie's skill at understanding her children's feelings, her sensitivity to their needs, and her gift for gentle persuasion enabled her to find original solutions to any problem or situation that might crop up.

Along with her seven children, Margie was blessed with thirteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, and twelve great, great grandchildren. All of whom looked forward to going to Granny’s house on the holidays, especially Christmas Eve. A feast was always prepared by Granny and everyone looked forward to her chicken and pastry, collards and ham, turkey and dressing, lemon pies, and so many of her other special dishes…dishes that only Granny could make.

Marjorie will be remembered for an endless number of things but most importantly, she will be remembered for the unconditional love and support she gave her family. Along with her tenderheartedness and kindness, she had a delightful personality and wit which drew the admiration of all who knew her. She always possessed a certain style and originality. She was a lively, self-expressive person who was forever looking to celebrate life. She had a knack for being clever, creative and witty, and for others, was a joy to be around. While she was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if her family looked to Margie for inspiration, leadership, wisdom and even courage. She was always more than willing to share life’s experiences with her loved ones. She will always be loved, remembered and cherished.

God saw you getting weaker, so he did what he thought was best.

He came and stood beside you and he whispered "Come to rest."

We could not understand it, no matter how we tried.

If love could have saved you, you never would have died.

Marjorie Humphrey Hill was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 21, 2014 at home with her children by her side.

She was born on October 7, 1917 in Lenoir County to Oscar Humphrey Sr. and Emma Smith Humphrey. She was a devoted wife, homemaker, loving “Mama” and “Grandma”. Her 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren adored their “Granny Hill”.

She was a faithful member of Spring Garden Baptist Church for over 60 years where she taught primary sunday school during those earlier years. Due to her illness, she was unable to attend the past two years and she missed the fellowship with her church family, who she dearly loved. Prior to her death she was the oldest living member of Spring Garden Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jonas William (J.W.), her parents Oscar Humphrey Sr. and Emma Smith Humphrey, brothers Jake, Alfred and Clarence, sisters Evelyne, Annie Lee, Ethel and Bernice, great-grandchildren Alexandra Caroline Edwards and Gary Hill Jr. and her son in law J.B. Mattocks.

Left to cherish her memories are sons Jimmie (Charlene), Freddie (MaryAnn) Larry (Linda) daughters Margaret Murphy (J.K.), Frances Edwards (Bobby), Betty Mattocks and Patricia Hill; 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren; her brothers, John Humphrey, Carlyle Humphrey and Ralph Humphrey along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Cotten Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Alan Edwards, Justin Hill, Ryan Murphy, Dwayne Murphy, Lee Walker and Greg Broadway. Honorary Pallbearers will be Gerald Edwards, Jerry Murphy, Randy Murphy, Christopher Hill, Berkley Hill and Jimmie Hill Jr. The Family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cotten Funeral Home and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Spring Garden Baptist Church Building Fund.

The family would like to thank Dr. Christine Bounous and her staff for their care and concern for our mother through all the years .
