Kathryn Adair Young Nelson was born August 23, 1939, in Canisteo, NY to Herman and Mary Young. Kathy grew up in Canisteo with her four siblings and went on to get her undergraduate degree from SUNY Geneseo. Kathy then moved to Rochester, NY where she taught first grade at Cobbles Elementary School in the Penfield school district. Kathy met her husband Bob in 1967 and they were married in 1968, settling in Penfield, NY. Daughter Bethany arrived in 1972. Kathy returned to school and received her Masters in Special Education from Nazareth College in 1984. Kathy taught middle school special education for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) until her retirement in 1997. Kathy and Bob then moved to New Bern, NC residing first in Fairfield Harbor, then moving to Greenbrier, where Kathy has resided for the past 15 years.
Both in Penfield and New Bern Kathy was active in the Presbyterian Church and in church and community singing groups. She often sang duets and trios with her sisters. She enjoyed playing tennis, Euchre and Bridge and serving on neighborhood committees. Kathy was a docent at Tryon Palace for several years and a supporter of the Craven Literacy Council where she taught adults to read. Kathy enjoyed attending and performing in concerts, her daily walks, beach trips and travels abroad with her family, and spending time with friends.
She is survived by her daughter Bethany and husband Jason (Corey) and granddaughters Camden and Quinn Corey of Los Angeles, CA, her sister Janis and husband Michael (Malone) of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, her sister Susan and husband Stephen (Jones) of New Bern, NC, her brother John and wife Donna Young of Charlotte, NC, numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Friday, October 28th at the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Craven Literacy Council.
