John Charles Butters Sr. of New Bern, North Carolina (formerly of Staten Island, N.Y. and Middlebush, N.J.), sadly left us on June 28, 2022 following a lengthy illness. He was 85 years old. John is survived by his beloved wife Rita, children John (Mary), Chris (Toni) and Debra (Joseph) Esposito, seven grandchildren and sisters Susan Dobson and Nancy Mavian. John’s brother James predeceased him.
John worked for Consolidated Edison- NY for 39 years. He retired in 1996 as a Supervisor at the Staten Island, NY Control Center.
Throughout his life, John served his community. He served 4 years in the US Airforce as Military Police in Japan. John was instrumental in installing the first lighting system at the Staten Island Little League, N.Y. during the late 1960’s, early 1970’s. During this time, he also volunteered as a manager of several little league teams and as scout master for his son’s Boy Scout troops.
John served as a Captain and Safety Officer in the Middlebush, N.J. Fire Department during the 1990’s. John was later a Board Member of The River Bend Parks & Recreation Department in New Bern, N.C. and was a Founding Member of the River Bend Community Emergency Response Team in the early 2000’s. John was also an active member in Elks Lodge 764 in New Bern since 2014.
Throughout his life John was an avid hunter, fisherman and furniture maker. He enjoyed camping throughout the entire continental U.S. and was an active member in the S.I. Sundowners in S.I., N.Y. and the Fairfield Harbor Camping Club in New Bern, N.C.
A wake will be held at Cotten Funeral Home, 2201 Neuse Blvd., New Bern, N.C. on Tuesday July 5th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm with funeral services to be held at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 3005 Country Club Rd., New Bern, N.C. on Wednesday July 6th at 10:30am. Interment to follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Montford Landing Rd, Jacksonville, N.C. at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
