Joan Marie Perrey

Joan was born July 7, 1927, in Fort Wayne, IN to the late Clayton and Elizabeth (Clusserath) Crawford. She graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne; following graduation became a Medical Assistant and worked in a doctor's office for many years. She later married her high school sweetheart, R Eugene (Gene) Perrey, and raised 6 children.

Joan took pleasure in gathering with family and friends, whether it was an inaugural ball, a hurricane party or a costume birthday soiree. She attended her own traditions, awarding menu and desert honors to the birthday child; making that day, their day.

She once remarked – I was like an only child – and I was going to have a house full of commotion; in that she excelled.

She was loyal and loving. Her mind was sharp. Holding court on the McCarthy Court bridge table in New Bern, she was quick to call out skillful plays and whisper about best partners.

Joan was ready to rejoin Gene, her husband of 53 years. They are together celebrating their life and the family they created. And he’s getting a strong talkin’ to!

Joan is survived by: her children; Dennis J Perrey (Beth Zirkelbach) of Newburgh, IN; Debra J DeGeare (Ron) of New Bern, NC; Robin E Perrey of Garner, NC; Clayton E Perrey (Starla) of Newport, NC; Mary R Maddrey (Bobby) of Aiken, SC; and Juli M Saylor (David) of Beaufort, NC; a brother Gerald E Crawford (Andie) of New Port Richey, FL; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R Eugene (Gene) Perrey and her parents.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at the White Deer Park Nature Center Classroom, 2400 Aversboro Road, Garner, NC 27529 followed by a luncheon.
