Polly was a registered nurse for 35 years in the nursery at Craven Regional Medical Center, now called CarolinaEast Medical Center. She helped with the delivery of many of her grandchildren, including hundreds of babies in the New Bern area. Polly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, friend, and above all Christian.
She is survived by her children, Bass Mitchell (Debbie), Danny Mitchell (Lisa), Ida Wright (Woody), Sherry Holler, and Renee Brown (Randy); grandchildren, Michael Mitchell, Melody Jenkins, Meredith DeSantis, Jodie Tyler, Haley Cunningham, Taylor Wright, Megan Ragland, Sabre Dunn, Kelly Nay, Casey Hoffman, Emerson Brown, Jessica Whitford, and Brandon Brown; great-grandchildren, Kemper Mitchell, Kaley Tyler, Mandy Tyler, Grayson Tyler, Sayla Tyler, Hudson Cunningham, Delilah Cunningham, Tristan Wright, Liam Wright, Banks Ragland, Charleston Ragland, Philip Bowling, Seth Bowling, Sarah Harden, Luke Bowling, Lee Nay, Sam Nay, Olivia Nay, Davis Hoffman, Dawson Hoffman, Camdyn Whitford, Evlee Whitford, Berklee Whitford, Rylee Koonce and Bennett Koonce; great-great grandchildren, Addison Nay, Ashton Patterson, and Barrett Long; sisters, Alma Cottle and Opal Grace; and many loving family members and close friends.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, John Mitchell and CL Creel, and brothers, Leonard Wells, Ralph Wells, and Pete Wells.
A celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at Temple Baptist Church, 1500 Kingdom Way, New Bern, NC 28560. The family will receive visitors following the service.
