Charlie was born on January 16, 1931 and spent his childhood in Rocky Mount, NC. He graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1949. After graduation, his family moved to New Bern. His first years of college were spent at Lenoir Rhyne College after which he enlisted in the United States Army to serve in Korea in the Counter Intelligence Corps with the 308th detachment. Following his military service, he completed his education at East Carolina College and then joined his father in the electrical business at Hammond Electric in New Bern. He later acquired the business changing its name to Eleco, Inc. and operated it until his retirement.
One of his many hobbies was boating, especially sailing with his family. A charter member of the Oriental Yacht Club, he was also Commodore of the East Carolina Yacht Club. On two occasions, he sailed with friends to Bermuda and served as navigator. Additionally, he was a passionate model railroader with his wife, and spent many enjoyable hours in this endeavor.
Charlie served as president of the New Bern Golf and Country Club as well as the Board of Directors of New Bern Savings and Loan Association. He was active in many civic clubs over his many years in New Bern.
Charlie was married to Elizabeth Morrison Gryb on November 10, 1952; they were married for 63 years. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and their four children, Charles H. Gryb, Jr. and his wife Leigh, Elizabeth G. Antry and her husband Arnold, Robert H. Gryb and his wife Rene, and Elise G. Clippinger and her husband Mark; his six grandchildren, Sarah A. Riggs, Rebecca A. Davis, Charles H. Gryb, III, Brooke Gryb, Claudia Clippinger and Thomas Gryb; four great grandchildren, Hunter Davis, Easton Riggs, Caroline Davis and Anderson Riggs.
The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care given by Dr. Richard Gorman and Dr. Svetlana Kats and their staffs. In lieu of flowers, Charlie’s family requests that memorial gifts be made to Craven County Hospice or to a charity of one’s choice.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
