Leo H. Sylvia, age 90, born January 27, 1932 returned to his heavenly home on January 19, 2023 due to an aging body and a broken heart of being separated in death by the passing of his wife of 67 years, just 17 days prior. He was the beloved husband of the late Gertrude Sylvia of New Bedford and father of 5 children.
Born in New Bedford Ma., he was the only son of the late Anthony and Germaine Sylvia of Acushnet.
Leo served honorably in the US Army as a Sergeant in the Korean War from 1952-1954. After returning home, he married Gertrude, the love of his life.
Leo was a wonderful provider and worked many years as an electrician for The New England Telephone Company. He retired in 1987 after teaching his skills to many newcomers in the company. After retirement, he spent many winters in Estero, Florida. He loved his home at Riverwood’s Plantation and while he was there, he said many times, “I own a little piece of paradise.” Riverwood’s quickly became his second home and he loved the people, and Sundays spent with family at Ft Myers beach.
Leo loved being retired and spent a great deal of time puttering around his home and yard. His children always said, “Dad can build or fix just about anything!”
Leo and Gert traveled extensively in their motorhome and made happy memories camping, and fishing around New England. He and Gert looked forward to their annual Labor Day party where they hosted family and friends. They loved gathering at their condo in Falmouth, MA. where many Sunday gatherings were also held.
Leo was very content in his older years to be at home and he loved visits with his family and friends. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his quick wit and songs he sang in his fluent languages of English, French and Portuguese. Leo is preceded in death by his wife Gertrude, his son Ken and sister Doris Sylvia Diaz-Rubin. He is survived by his children Donna Encarnarcio (Arthur), Michael Sylvia (Charlene), Robert Sylvia (Wendy) and Linda Amaral (Francisco). He enjoyed his 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Friday, January 27, 2023 from 9:30 to 11:00AM in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Francis Xavier Parish, 125 Main Street, Acushnet, MA 02743.
