Joseph George O'Brien

Joseph George O’Brien, Peps to his grandchildren, 92, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada on November 14, 1927, and immigrated to this country as a child. He was a long time Acushnet resident.

Joseph George was a master machinist, having learned his trade as a member of the Army Air Force, and served in Germany and Belgium during the Korean War. He worked at Morse Cutting Tools for thirty-five years, and ended his career at Johnson and Johnson, where he helped to develop and manufacture a specialized cranial drill used for brain surgery. He also served his town as a volunteer firefighter, and worked as a part time school bus driver. Following retirement, he also drove the bus for the town's Council on Aging. Joseph George loved being surrounded by family, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed gardening, travelling, playing cribbage, crossword puzzles and making his friends and family laugh. He will be greatly missed by his cherished family and friends.

Joseph George is survived by his loving companion, Mary Souza, his children, Jacaline O’Brien, Susan Bagdonis and her husband Glenn, Lawrence O’Brien and his wife Kathleen, Janet Girard and her husband Jerome, Joan Dextraze and her husband David, and John O’Brien, his grandchildren Heidi O’Brien, Guthrie Bagdonis and his wife Stephanie, Emily Bochman and her husband Ryan, Jeremy Girard and his wife Laura, Daniel Girard, Kristen O’Brien, Kaitlyn Burke and her husband Dan, Julie Dextraze, Melissa Do Couto and her husband Kevin, and Kaylee O’Brien, and his great grandchildren, Olivia and Lucas Girard, Ainsley Bagdonis, Gavyn Bochman, and Owen Do Couto. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Ida O'Brien, Pauline O'Brien and Pauline Simmons, his brother-in-law, Roger Marcotte and stepsister, Shirley Hall. He is predeceased by his wife, Florence (Marcotte) O’Brien, daughter Carol Dufresne, and grandson Nicholas Dufresne, as well as his siblings, Joseph Laurence, Joseph Roger, Joseph Leonard, Joseph Patrick and Marie Jeanette Duport as well as many nieces and nephews

His Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, February 24, 2020 at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Parish, 125 Main St. Acushnet followed by burial in Acushnet Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday 2-5 p.m. in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Donations in his memory may be made to the Acushnet Council on Aging, 59 S. Main St., Acushnet.
