Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Manuel and Mary (Vieira) Cardoza, he was a lifelong resident of the city.
Mr. Cardoza was a United States Army Air Force Veteran having served during World War II attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He had worked as a supervisor for Teledyne Rodney Metals for 30 years.
Joseph enjoyed being outdoors and loved walking and biking. In earlier years, he enjoyed golfing. He was a committee member of the Madeira Feast and Our Lady of Angels Feast.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Linda Florent and husband James, Deborah Duclos and Doreen Jackson and husband Craig all of New Bedford; a brother, Daniel Cardoza and longtime companion Marianne; three sisters, Dolores Leger and husband Arthur, Dorothy Gallant and Irene Chausse and husband Donald all of New Bedford; five grandsons, Trevor Florent and wife Allison, Daniel Duclos and wife Julie, Thomas Duclos, Mitchell and Ross Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Jillian and Jacob Florent all of New Bedford; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel and James Cardoza, Mary Chevalier, Rose Gonsalves and Alice Cardoza.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 9am in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle St., New Bedford followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38101-9908.
