Born in New Bedford and lived in Fairhaven for 53 years. John was the youngest of 12 and the last surviving child of the late John Perry Mello and Maria Sylvia Mello. He was married to the love of his life, Lucille (Melanson) Mello, for 65 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s in Fairhaven. Our dad loved his children and grandchildren “with all my Heart and Soul.” Our dad loved our mom fiercely and did not want to part from this Earth because he did not want to leave her. He was a huge New England sports fan and never missed watching the Patriots or Red Sox. Our dad enjoyed watching the news on television.
In addition to his beloved wife Lucille, he is survived by his children Brenda Brillon and her husband Ted Brillon of Rochester; Bruce Mello and his wife Monique Mello of Rochester; Jane Albrecht and her husband Donald Albrecht of Fairhaven; Christopher Mello and his wife Charlene Mello of Rochester; Karen LeBlanc and her husband David LeBlanc of Fairhaven; John Mello and his wife Kristine Mello of New Bedford.
12 Grandchildren Nicole Enos, Sarah Horta, Lauren Allain, Sheridan Andrews, Alexandria Mello, Erik Albrecht, Alexander Albrecht, Cassandra Rozelle, Zachary Mello, Lindsey LeBlanc, Tyler LeBlanc, and Jessica Mello and 11 great grandchildren.
He was employed by the Acushnet Company for 29 years until he retired. In his younger years, he was an amateur boxer and enjoyed playing baseball. He loved to draw, make scrimshaw, and reverse oil paintings on glass until his sight was impaired. He made child size tables and chairs for his grandchildren and many others that we cherish. When mom was well, they were always doing home renovation projects. Mom would take down a wall, then the project would take off from there. Our father was a kind and generous man who loved to rock and sing to his children and grandchildren. His family was everything to him.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Fairhaven Community Nurse Home Care for the support they gave to our dad and to our family especially RN’s Jada and Stephanie and the wonderful CNA’s and volunteers.
