Born in New Bedford to the late John and Mary (Balderson) McCarthy, he was a lifelong area resident and a communicant of the former St. Joseph’s Church.
Before losing his sight to retinitis pigmentosa, John worked as a social worker and was a member of the Sassaquin Lions Club and the New Bedford Airport Commission. He was also a recreational pilot who loved to share this passion with his family and friends. In the years prior to his passing, he enjoyed listening to his numerous radios and discussing politics.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Dr. Jennifer L. McCarthy of Henderson, NV; son, Dr. Jeffrey J. McCarthy and his wife Dr. Heather (Frank) McCarthy of Little Compton, RI; two grandchildren, Noah E. McCarthy and Molly J. McCarthy; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Allison McCarthy.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be November 2, 2022 at 10am in St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, 343 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford, MA 02745. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, State Road, New Bedford.
