Born in New Bedford, son of the late Manuel and Mary (Souza) Martin, he had resided in New Bedford for most of his life until retiring to Bradenton, Florida and then Santa Rosa, California, recently returning to New Bedford.
As George would say, “if it had wheels I can drive it!” He drove school buses, 18-wheelers, limousines, and even learned how to detail golf courses. However, for the bulk of his career, George worked in the construction industry as a truck driver for Lakeville Ready Mix, Warren Brothers in Acushnet and Swansea Concrete until his well-deserved retirement.
George loved “making memories” with family and friends. Some of his favorite things to do was hosting gatherings, helping others, playing Mexican Train and Aggravation, being outdoors, gardening and planting, walking, golfing, biking, playing tennis, and “watching a ball game.” He and his wife enjoyed dancing. George loved animals, especially his beloved chihuahua, Spanky.
Surviving in addition to his wife Patricia are his children, Susan Martin of FL, Cindy Martin of Swansea, Gail Martin of CT, Kevin Martin of Acushnet and Matt Martin and his wife Arcelia Moreno of CA; a sister, Delores Amaral and her husband Tony of TN; his grandchildren, Caitlyn, Madison, Jena, Andrew, Devin, Taylor, Brooke, Jesseca, Noah, Dolce Vita and Charles; his great grandchildren, Aiden, Zoey, Alexandria, Savannah and Skylar; numerous nieces and nephews, and a lot of extended family in California. He was predeceased by his siblings, Mary Santos, Laura Barreiro, Manuel Martin, Jr., Linda Caldeira and Margaret Nunes.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Lighthouse Animal Shelter (lighthouseanimalshelter.org).
