Derek was born in New Bedford, MA. He graduated from New Bedford High School (class of 1996) and then from Massachusetts Maritime Academy (class of 2000), where he obtained his BS in Marine Transportation.
Derek proudly served in the US Navy for over 12 years as Ship’s Navigator, Operations Officer Afloat, and Communication Officer Afloat. Derek’s Naval service also included supporting the Army and Marine Corps. Derek is awarded with Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2), Army Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy “E” Ribbon (3), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service. Derek’s last duty assignment was on the USS John Paul Jones in San Diego, CA. Derek really enjoyed living in San Diego during his time in the service.
Derek loved his family including his dogs, Hoppie and Wiggles. He enjoyed spending time with his friends, gardening, and new technology. Derek loved his grandparents more than words could describe. He honored their memories through the photos and heirlooms he treasured. Christmas was always very special to Derek and brought him much happiness.
In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by his siblings, Ryan Pedro and his wife of Dartmouth and Kevin Pedro of Orlando; his nieces; and an aunt, Cheryl Giovanni; and cousins. He was the grandson of the late Manuel and Mary Pedro and Charles and Claire Economos.
