William H. “Bill” Schmidt, 94 years of age passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020 in New Albany, IN. He was born June 25, 1925 in Navilleton, IN to the late Herman and Mary (Schmelz) Schmidt. Bill married Anna Sturgeon on July 5, 1948 and she survives. He was an Army Veteran serving in World War II with the 240th Engineers Division in Osaka, Japan and then went on to work at the Kroger Co. in real estate and construction for 12 years and later retired from the Butternut Bread Co. after 21 years of employment. He served his community as a New Albany City Councilman from 1992 until 2007, he was on the Floyd County Waste Board from 1992 until 2007, Caesars Foundation Board from 2004 until 2007, New Albany Plan Commission, and also the New Albany Housing Authority Board. His memberships included, the Lion’s Club, Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish Council, St. Vincent DePaul Society, American Legion Post 28, Hobart Beach VFW Post 1693, and he was also a Kentucky Colonel. Bill received the Hobart Beach Post 1693 outstanding citizen award in 1993. He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Schmidt, brothers, Carl, Richard, and Herb Schmidt, and sisters, Nettie Jones and Monica Haskell.
Along with his wife of 71 years Anna, Bill is survived by his sons, Daniel Schmidt (Toni), and Gregory Schmidt (Jan), grandchildren, Kelly Schmidt (Amanda), Devony Schmidt, and Evan Schmidt, and a sister Evelyn Banet (Raymond).
All services will be private under the direction of Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Holy Family Catholic in New Albany.
