Samuel "Sam" Rex Hopper, 77, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on May 25, 2022. He was surrounded by his family, at his home, in Georgetown, IN. He was born September 15, 1944 in Louisville, KY to the late Raymond and Margaret Hopper. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his son Matthew S. Hopper, his three grandsons, Leo T. Burgin, Jared A. Harmon, and Blane Foreman. He is survived by his siblings Donnie Hopper of Louisville, KY; twin sister Sharon Shirley (Alvin) of Georgetown, IN; along with his loving spouse of 57 years Clara C. (Ott) Hopper, his 8 children Laura Sinkhorn (Dan), Christopher Hopper (Sherilee), Catherine Foreman (Derrick), Vincent Hopper, Mary Harmon (Jeff), Jessica Korte (Jason), Felicia Fletcher (Ryan), Philip Hopper (Elizabeth). Also his 21 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Sam retired from Lucent Technologies (ATT, formerly Western Electric) after 40 years in 2005. He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1962 and was an involved member of the Alumni. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed his family and community. He was a former member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and a long-term member of St. Mary’s New Albany Catholic Church. He was an active member of his church through the Men’s Club, was a bus driver for the elderly on Sunday mornings, and enjoyed organizing the annual Church Yard Sale. He volunteered yearly with the Church picnic at both St. Mary’s New Albany and Mount Saint Francis. He participated in “Group” (Bible Study) with several men that made Cursillo with him. He aided in the construction of many homes through Habitat for Humanity. He was an energetic member, formerly of the Floyds Knobs Lions Club, and most recently of the Georgetown Lions Club, where he participated on the State and Local levels. Most importantly Sam was involved with eye screenings at the area elementary schools of several counties. He assisted with recurring handyman duties at the Floyd County 4-H Fair, he lovingly worked his in-laws farm with his sons, generally keeping things repaired. He loved being outdoors, keeping busy, mowing the grass, baling hay, metal detecting, bowling, playing horseshoes, solving cross word puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, drinking a Hershey Milk Shake daily, attending family events, and searching Indiana Unclaimed Funds to help others retrieve money due to them. Sam retained his sense of humor right up to his last days. He is dearly missed. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm ~ 8:00 pm Friday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 am Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Albany with entombment to follow at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Georgetown Lion’s Club.
