After being nominated for class President in his Junior and Senior years, he graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1949. He received a Bachelor of Architecture in 1954 from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, where he studied with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Director of the Bauhaus in both Dessau and Berlin, Germany.
After college, he served in the Army, stationed in Babenhausen, Germany. He was offered employment with famous architects, Arne Jacobson of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Max Bill of the New Bauhaus in Ulm, Germany; however the Army refused the release of servicemen outside the United States.
He returned to Louisville in 1956 after his service obligation and was employed with McCulloch & Bickel, Architects where he met and married Johanna in 1958. After partnerships with Richard Scott and the late Jack Garner in 1960, he opened his office, Kissinger & Associates in 1975 to present, specializing in schools, churches, libraries, and other contemporary architecture. He was registered in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, Florida, and the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB), which allows the possibility to practice the profession of architecture in additional states.
