Kathlyn Marie "Kay" (Cooper) Garry, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Born and raised in Louisville, Ky., but a Hoosier at heart, Kay was preceded in death by her husband John Jr. "Jack", and her daughter Mary Ann Prestigiacomo. She leaves behind her son John, his wife Lisa, and their son Sean, as well as Mary Ann's husband Joe Prestigiacomo and their two sons, Joe (and Joe's wife Karoline) and Justin.
Kay came into this world on Lincoln's Birthday, February 12, 1938, as the first daughter of Jason Cooper and Margaret Riggs Cooper, both deceased. Kay hails from a big family of siblings, in order of birth: Don, (Kay), Greg, Marlene, Phil, and Diane. Kay is the first of that devoted group to depart. The number of nephews and nieces is too vast to list, but know that Kay had a helping hand in raising some of them, and loved all of them.
Kay was a graduate of Loretto High School, and enjoyed music, tennis, and golf. She played the piano, could read music, but also had a mean flat serve on the tennis court. Kay was a superb card player and won many pinochle games while traveling with her sisters. She was always ready for a trip to the track or even Europe with her husband Jack, a well-known local attorney.
Kay was a dedicated public servant, she served many years in many roles: as a manager of the local Indiana BMV; as New Albany City Controller under 4 Mayors; and as a bookkeeper for the New Albany Police Department. Kay had a giving and collaborative team spirit that was uplifting to everyone she came in contact with. She also served for a decade on the Floyd Memorial (now Baptist Health) Hospital Board of Directors, and the family would like to thank Baptist's ER, NHU, and ICU doctors and staff, particularly the nurses that treated Kay in the past month for their loving care, and also thank her longtime personal physicians, Dr. Daniel Eichenberger and Dr. Christine Minrath.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 18, 2022, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at 10 am, at Kay's longtime parish, Holy Family Church, 129 West Daisy Lane, New Albany, Indiana.
Kay's family requests that expressions of sympathy be directed to the charity of your choice in her memory.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.kraftfuneralservice.net for the Garry family.
