Elizabeth (Thelma) Sherwood passed away on May 31, 2021 at Vista Park Lodge in St. Vital, just 5 days after her 105th birthday.
She is survived by her two sons, Les (Valerie) of Calgary and Neil (Janet) of Port Macquarie, Australia; grandchildren, Laurel (Sam) and Graham of Calgary; and great-grandchildren, Rosie and Jane.
Elizabeth was born in Treherne, Manitoba, along with her sister Doreen, to John and Pearl Smith, but lived most of her life in Winnipeg, firstly in St Boniface and then settling in St. Vital for the past 65 years.
She married Leslie Earl Sherwood in August, 1941 and they were both happy to celebrate their 50th anniversary on August 9, 1991. Leslie passed away on November 4, 1994 and Elizabeth continued to live in the family home on Glen Ave until she was 102 years old, when she moved to Vista Park Lodge.
She had several jobs over the years including at Eatons and in Dr. Mohamed’s medical office, but the job she devoted herself to was as a mother and homemaker at which she excelled. She was a loving mother who always put her family first. She loved baking and the house always had goodies in the cupboard which spilled over to friends of the kids and various charitable teas and bake sales for the Eastern Star and United Church functions.
Elizabeth was a long term member of The Order of The Eastern Star, where she was recently awarded recognition for 60 years of service. She very much enjoyed the fellowship of The Eastern Star and achieved the level of Worthy Matron.
Our mother loved travel by car or to various world destinations with her husband, Les. She particularly enjoyed her trips to Australia to visit Neil, Janet and her family. Another favourite place was the family cottage at Brereton Lake and before that, visits to the Sherwood cottage at Sherwood Lake.
The family is very grateful to the staff at Vista Park Lodge for the excellent care they have provided her over the last three years. In the final years of living in the family home a number of caregivers as well as neighbours on Glen Ave also provided great support.
In accordance with Elizabeth’s wishes and COVID restrictions, there will be no service, however it is suggested that friends and family remember her and make a toast to her the next time they are enjoying a glass of wine or maybe more appropriately a piece of matrimonial cake.
