Sarah Sheridan Wood, 71, of Nashville, TN passed away September 15, 2023. Sally was born on April 9, 1952 in Nashville to Dr. William Frederick Sheridan, Jr. and Bradford Keene Sheridan. She had a wonderful upbringing, always commenting that her parents were great in many ways, and she fondly recalled the fun she had playing with her three brothers. Sally attended Harpeth Hall and Hillsboro High School before deciding to start a family. She married William B. Bass and the couple had two children, Chris and Charlie. Sally was a loving and devoted mother to her two boys, instilling them with good values and respect for others. She also supported their academic pursuits and embraced their creative gifts. Sally loved morning exercises, Bible reading, lunching with friends, baking chocolate cakes, singing hymns, and everything involving Christmas.
A stickler for grammar, Sally would occasionally markup the local papers in red pen before sending them back to the publisher and we are certain she would have many edits to the sentences you are reading now. Her love of words extended to puzzle books and game shows, most notably Wheel of Fortune, guessing many of the puzzles correctly before the contestants attempted to solve. She was a fan of all variety of morning shows (including the Today Show and the Ralph Emery Show). much to the bafflement of her youngest son, a night person since the age of 8 who just wanted to go back to bed.
As the boys aged, Sally developed new passions for gardening and fishing, inspired by her second husband Ralph Wood, She planted vegetable gardens behind her home and at the lake house she shared with Ralph, where she caught many fish from the Tennessee River. She truly loved spending time at this lake house where she could invite friends to stay the weekend for games and relaxation.
Sally wore numerous hats in the work world, finding early success as a receptionist, bookkeeper, and insurance clerk. Sally was most notably employed as the Director of Programming for WDCN (now NPT) from the mid-80s to late 90s, planning the airing schedules, writing show descriptions, and more. She also worked as a recruiter and in child care, the latter of which reflected her longtime skill in communicating with small children. Before retiring, she enjoyed working with her brother Jim Sheridan remodeling houses.
Sally was known for her boundless positive energy, playfulness, and generosity of spirit - a lively, witty, spark plug who truly cared for others. She is survived by her sons Chris Bass, Charles Bass (Katherine Rogers), and her brothers Jim Sheridan (Kim Sheridan), Fred Sheridan (Tracey Sheridan) and John Sheridan. Preceded in death by her parents, Dr. William Frederick Sheridan, Jr. and Bradford Keene Sheridan, and her husband Ralph Bryant Wood. Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home on Friday, September 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with burial to follow.
