Marianne was born a tomboy. She loved the outdoors. As a kid she climbed trees, loved roaming the neighborhood on her 10-speed bike and exploring the woods behind our house. One summer a softball coach saw her throw a ball and asked her to join his team. She didn’t know anything about softball but she picked it up quickly securing first base position and loving it!
Marianne was a smart student: AP classes, Beta Club member and formed a strong interest in computer keypunch class. As a senior she got a work-study position at Third National Bank which became a full time job. She worked and attended Nashville Tech receiving Associates Degree in computer programming. She left the bank in 1988 to use her degree at St Thomas hospital for the next 35 years.
She kept an adventurist spirit into adulthood with hang-gliding, zip-lining, hiking, local marathons and as recent as 2023, skydiving with her nephew.
Marianne loved others. She stayed behind and helped many neighbors when the 2010 flood swept through River Plantation. At Christmas she and her coworkers bought gifts for a local orphanage. Marianne always chose to buy for the children who asked for an instrument. She loved music and didn’t want a child to not pursue their dreams due to financial concerns.
She opened her home to family going through difficult times, initiated family trips (Florida, Alaska, Ireland) and guided weekly Bible studies with sisters and niece. Marianne was the BEST Aunt and Great Aunt ever! Mention a sport or class or vacation you might like and she didn’t hesitate to encourage you and back you. She wanted to be there, to be a part of our lives. That’s how she showed us love.
She brought this family closer together. We are going to miss her greatly.
Sister to Jane Callahan and Julie (Tim) Ingram; aunt to Megan (John) Parks, Jeff (Anita) Callahan and Stephen Callahan; and great-aunt to Jack Thomas Callahan, and Shire Parks.
She is preceded in death by parents C.B. and Leola Mixon; and a sister, Rebecca Lee Mixon.
A Memorial Mass and Visitation will be held on Wednesday January 24, 2024, at St. Henry Catholic Church at 6401 Harding Pike in Nashville. The Visitation will be from 10am to 11am, with the Memorial Mass starting at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marianne’s honor may be made to St. Jude.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers as the family grieves.
