He was born in Nashville on July 5, 1928 to the late W. H. (Herman) and Martha Burton.
Predeceased by his brother, Harris Burton, and devoted sister, Virginia B. Grimes, he is survived by nephew, James B. (Chip) Grimes, and sister-in-law, Barbara F. Grimes, both of Nashville.
An alumnus of the Peabody Demonstration School (1948), Lewis also graduated from
Nashville's George Peabody College for Teachers with a Master of Fine Arts degree. Mr. Burton taught Art in the Davidson County School System prior to becoming an Associate Professor of Art at Austin Peay State University (APSU), Clarksville, TN, in 1960 and retiring in 1982. A contributing artist to the Tennessee Arts Commission's permanent collection, his work has been exhibited at the Trahern Gallery at APSU, Huntsville Arts League in Alabama, and Cheekwood Estate & Gardens in Nashville.
