John Bernard Marshall

John Bernard Marshall, born August 2, 1927, in Omaha, Nebraska, was the son of Reverend Benjamin H. Marshall and Bessie May Hatch Marshall and the brother of Marian Marshall Schumacher. He met Helen Manninen Marshall in Washington, D.C. They were married for 57 years until her passing. John and Helen called their three nephews and two nieces their “kids” and followed their activities closely.

John was raised in Watchung, New Jersey. He attended Watchung and North Plainfield elementary schools. John graduated from North Plainfield High School in 1945. Drafted into the Army in 1945, John served as an MP at West Point; he qualified for the GI Bill. Following military service, John entered Yale University and attained an undergraduate degree and a law degree. He later returned to Yale University and completed a Master of Law degree.

John practiced law with Covington and Burling in Washington, D.C. before returning to New Jersey to form a private law practice. He served as Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Business Administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University. He spent two years at Haile Selassie I University in Ethiopia as a Fulbright Associate Professor of Law and Assistant Dean prior to joining the Vanderbilt University Law School faculty in 1969. During a two-year absence from Vanderbilt, John taught as a Fulbright faculty member at the University of Zambia. He served as Associate Dean during part of his tenure at Vanderbilt University Law School; he retired to the status of Adjunct Professor of Law in 1995 and was named Professor Emeritus.

Visitation will be on October 17, 2024 from 4-7 at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home. Memorial service will be on October 19, 2024 at First Lutheran Church at 11 AM.
